Getting Stopped for a DUI

by Staff Writer

Driving after you have consumed alcohol can create potential stressful issues because you could get into a serious legal issue.  There are ways of changing the problem and getting yourself out of trouble.  DUI cops will not stop you from drinking.

If you or someone that you happen to know is dealing with a DUI case, it would be best to contact an attorney as soon as possible!

What should your strategy be?

  • If an officer turns his lights or sirens on, pull over immediately, in the safest manner.  Then pull your window down and put your hands on the steering wheel.
  • It would also be wise to get your information ready for them. They will need your license, registration, and insurance card.

Important Things to Keep in Mind

  • Do not attempt to converse with the officer because he is trying to convict you.  It would be best to politely advise them that you have been told by counsel to remain silent.  You have the right to remain silent, this is a privilege.
  • In a large majority of the states, there is only going to be one test, the breathalyzer.  If you have an option, choose the urine test.  There is no point in doing two tests unless you are not able to finish the first one.
  • The officer will ask you to perform a few field coordination tests.  These are known as field sobriety tests.  You do not have to perform these tests, so do not do them.
  • The DUI officer will more than likely ask you to take a breath test.  This is a small gadget that he would like you to blow into.  The officer cannot force you to take this test.  This is supposed to be the required implied consent test, but it would not hurt to ensure that it isn’t.
